Frederick S. Lane

Frederick Lane is an author, attorney, educational consultant, and nationally recognized expert on privacy, cybersafety, and the societal impact of emerging technologies. For over two decades, he has explored critical issues at the intersection of law, technology, and education, including student safety, digital misconduct, cybersecurity, and personal privacy. He has authored ten books on technology-related topics, including Cybertraps for Educators 2.0 (2020), Raising Cyberethical Kids (2020), and Cybertraps for Expecting Moms & Dads (2017). His forthcoming books include Cybertraps for Educators 3.0 (2025) and The Rise of the Digital Mob (Beacon Press, 2026).


A highly sought-after speaker, Lane has delivered over 300 lectures and presentations at universities, school districts, and international conferences on topics such as personal privacy, ethics, digital misconduct, cybersafety, and artificial intelligence. Recognized as a Fulbright Specialist in Law and Computer Technology by the U.S. State Department, he has traveled to Guangzhou, China; and Accra, Ghana; to educate students on cybersafety and privacy. Most recently, Lane has collaborated with the Hawaii Education Association to create and present professional development courses on AI and generative technology.


Lane has appeared on numerous national media programs, including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; ABC's Nightline and Good Morning America Weekend; CBS's 60 Minutes and Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood; NBC's Today Show and Weekend Today; as well as various BBC and CNN documentaries. He has also been featured on national, regional, and local radio programs.


Before moving to Brooklyn, NY, with his wife, Dr. Amy Werbel, Lane lived for 23 years in Burlington, Vermont, where he served in various local positions, including ten years on the Burlington School Board (two years as Chair), Ward Clerk, and member of the Burlington Fire Commission. He holds degrees from Amherst College (1985) and Boston College Law School (1988).
